Diversity in the Desert: Expanding the Airport’s Art Collection

  • Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport Terminal 3 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

As Phoenix Sky Harbor grows, so does its vast art collection. It all began in 1962 with one massive 75-foot-wide mural at Terminal 2 and the Airport’s collection has continued growing ever since. The designs of Terminals 3 and 4 incorporated spaces for art with large-scale paintings and sculptures as well as architecturally integrated works.

The Phoenix Airport Museum began in 1988 to enhance the guest experience by producing exhibitions throughout Phoenix Sky Harbor and maintaining the ever-increasing art collection. Today, the Museum has more than 1,000 pieces in all mediums, styles and sizes. Like all museums, only a fraction of the collection is on display at any one time.

On view for the first time are 41 newly acquired artworks in a wide variety of approaches and techniques ranging from colorful abstracts to realistic portraiture to Southwest themes. These new additions to the Airport's collection were purchased through the city of Phoenix’s Percent for Art Program.

Contemporary Arizona artists created art in various mediums using traditional and unconventional materials including cactus spines, bones, glass and metal. Enjoy these paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints and fiber works showcasing Arizona’s rich art and culture representing Diversity in the Desert.

HOW DOES YOUR ART AFFECT OTHERS?

Currently, neuroscientists are taking an interest in aesthetic experiences and have conducted numerous studies about what exactly happens in our brains as we view art. In one such study, an expert panel of scholars in the fields of neuroscience, art history, philosophy, psychology, and theology were recruited to generate a list of terms that describe visual artworks and their potential cognitive and affective impacts. The list of over 100 words was given to non-expert participants, who eliminated words with overlapping meaning and helped to narrow down the list to 11:

Compassionate, humbled, consoled, intimately engaged, hopeful, swept away, challenged, enlightened, confused, disgusted, and upset

CENTER GALLERY

Viewpoints: How We Understand Art.

The exhibition is an homage to Professor Emeritus Dr. Mary Erickson, who along with other art educators, published a theory called Viewpoints, which posits that people use one of five different lenses from which to view an artwork. Because different artworks sometimes require a viewer to use a different viewpoint, this exhibition will be comprised of a large variety of work.

Center Space is a community space designed for visitors to learn about the arts. Each fall and spring exhibition will feature activities for you to explore your creativity. We hope you will visit and spend time finding the artist in you!

Center Space is located inside Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 East Second Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85251. It is open to the public Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon – 5 p.m.; and during evening performances.
